HIA Advert for a Psychologist

Health Initiatives Association (HIA) is a non-governmental organisation operating in the rural part of Uganda. Our goal is to provide quality healthcare, education support and other social services for sustainable development of the local community. Our first program which was set in 2012 was HIV clinic which has grown to offer other health services in Buikwe. Currently our focus is on the group of HIV positive adolescents, who frequently suffer from stigma and mental health problems which requires the services of a psychologist.

Job brief

We are seeking for a compassionate and experienced Psychologist to join our team at our esteemed medical facility. As a valued member of our team, you will have the opportunity to provide vital counselling and therapy services to individuals, groups, and families of our HIV positive adolescents. Your primary responsibilities will involve conducting comprehensive assessments, accurately diagnosing mental health disorders, and developing personalized treatment plans.

Responsibilities

  1. Design mental-health intervention and prevention programs
  2. Establish positive, trusting rapport with adolescents
  3. Diagnose and treat mental health disorders
  4. Set learning goals based on each adolescent’s emotional, cognitive, and social strengths 
  5. Collaborate with other staff to create coordinated plans
  6. Schedule adolescent consultations to help build patient relationships
  7. Meet with adolescents regularly to provide counselling, treatment and adjust treatment plans as necessary
  8. Evaluate adolescents undergoing treatment and adjust wellness plans as needed
  9. Record adolescent information and manage confidential files
  10. Involve and advise family members when appropriate
  11. Carry out research activities as and when required

Requirements and skills

  1. Degree in Psychology
  2. Proven work experience as a psychologist
  3. Knowledge of various methods to prevent or treat mental-health problems and other difficulties
  4. Effective communication and counselling skills
  5. Integrity and professionalism
  6. A positive, patient, and resilient personality
  7. Strong observational skills and attention to detail
  8. Exceptional interpersonal skills
  9. Empathy and sensitivity when dealing with adolescents
  10. Highly analytical mindset
  11. Good diagnostic and problem-solving skills
  12. Confidentiality with client information
  13. Fluency in the Local Language (Luganda) is A MUST
